A recognizable brand needs a few dependable ideas. A useful system tells a team which elements stay steady and where the expression can change.
Define the constants.
Start with the identity, the type hierarchy and the way color behaves. Make those choices clear enough that a different person can apply them with confidence.
Leave room
for the unexpected.
Make variation intentional.
Photography, illustration and composition can change from one touchpoint to another while retaining a recognizable voice. Set useful boundaries rather than prescribing every possible layout.
Build for real use.
Test the system with the things the brand actually needs: a small social post, a long menu, a mobile screen or a package. The awkward cases often make the guidelines more useful.
